The Zapatista Movement
The Zapatista struggle officially began on January 1st, 1994 in the jungles of the state of Chiapas, Mexico.
The indigenous communities organized to protest in arms due to the extreme poverty conditions under which they have lived for centuries, along with the systematic brutalization of their peoples, by both the governmental authorities and the landholders of the region. They have taken up arms as their only alternative since any other attempt has been futile. Hundreds have died since the uprising, and the struggle continues. Writings by the subcomandante Marcos gained national and international attention, and the Zapatistas have become an example of dignity, courage, and unity.
